Configuring PPP with Authentication: PAP and CHAP – IT Zone

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) is the data link protocol used on serial links just like the HDLC. PPP is has more advanced features when compared with HDLC which is quite primitive. CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol) and PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) are the authentication protocol that are used on the serial link on router configuring PPP.

To configure PPP needs:

1. Packet Tracer Software

2. Minimum two router with serial interface

3. Switches and computers (Optional)

First take two router (Model No. 2811) and serial interface card from its physical menu option. Connects the two router with serial cable and other devices as like as the following image.

Configuring PPP with Authentication CHAP:

At first add IP address of all interface of computers and routers.

R1 interface ip address are:

R1(config)#int fa0/0
R1(config-if)#ip add 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0
R1(config-if)#no shR1(config)#int se0/0/0
R1(config-if)#ip add 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0
R1(config-if)#no sh
R1(config-if)#clock rate 9600

R2 interface ip address are:

R2(config)#int fa0/0
R2(config-if)#ip add 192.168.20.1 255.255.255.0
R2(config-if)#no shR2(config)#int se0/0/0
R2(config-if)#ip add 10.0.0.2 255.0.0.0
R2(config-if)#no sh
R1(config-if)#clock rate 9600

Now to transfer data packet from left side to right side or vice versa need to configure static route on each router.

R1 router static route command:

R1(config)#ip route 192.168.20.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.2

R2 router static route command:

R2(config)#ip route 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0 10.0.0.1

After configuring this static route, the data packet will be passed from one side to another successfully.

Before configuring PPP the router has default configuration as HDLC. To show this default configuration –

R1#sh int se0/0/0
Serial0/0/0 is administratively down, line protocol is down (disabled)
Hardware is HD64570
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
R2#sh int se0/0/0
Serial0/0/0 is administratively down, line protocol is down (disabled)
Hardware is HD64570
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation HDLC, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)

Now set user name and password for each router. User name must not be the same router host name. It will be the next hope router host name.

R1(config)#username R2 password cisco
R1(config)#int se0/0/0
R1(config-if)#encapsulation ppp
R1(config-if)#ppp authentication chap
R2(config)#username R1 password cisco
R2(config)#int se0/0/0
R2(config-if)#encapsulation ppp
R2(config-if)#ppp authentication chap

To show the PPP Configuration of R1 and R2 –

R1#sh int se0/0/0
Serial0/0/0 is up, line protocol is down (disabled)
Hardware is HD64570
Internet address is 10.0.0.1/8
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation PPP, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)
R2#sh int se0/0/0
Serial0/0/0 is up, line protocol is up (connected)
Hardware is HD64570
Internet address is 10.0.0.2/8
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 1544 Kbit, DLY 20000 usec,
reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
Encapsulation PPP, loopback not set, keepalive set (10 sec)

Configuring PPP with Authentication PAP:

All configuration of PAP will be the same as CHAP, only needed to change  the following command to configure the PPP.

R1 router’s PAP configuration will be:

R1(config)#username R2 password cisco
R1(config)#int se0/0/0
R1(config-if)#encapsulation ppp
R1(config-if)#ppp authentication pap
R1(config-if)#ppp pap sent-username R1 password cisco

R2 router’s PAP  configuration will be:

R2(config)#username R1 password cisco
R2(config)#int se0/0/0
R2(config-if)#encapsulation ppp
R2(config-if)#ppp authentication pap
R2(config-if)#ppp pap sent-username R2 password cisco
